How to record a walkthrough video for a punch list

The draft is only as useful as the walk. Talk the rooms out loud, hold on the defect, and name the expected fix so review is editing—not reconstruction.

What to record

Use the phone you already carry. Landscape or portrait both work. You do not need a special camera, a script, or a second person holding a clipboard.

Walk one area at a time. If the job is a duplex, finish Unit B before you start Unit A. Mixing buildings in one take makes the draft harder to review.

Talk in a pattern the review can use

For each issue, say three things out loud before you move on:

  1. Room or location. “Primary bath,” “stair landing,” “kitchen island, west wall.”
  2. The defect. What is wrong, in plain language. “Door strike is high,” not “this is a problem.”
  3. The expected fix. “Adjust the strike so the latch catches and the door closes flush.”

Hold the camera on the visual detail for two or three seconds after you name it. That still frame is what the person fixing the work will actually look at.

Field habits that keep the draft clean

  • Start the clip in daylight or turn on the room lights. Dark corners produce weak evidence.
  • One issue at a time. If you stack three defects in one sentence, the draft will too.
  • Skip the tour-guide filler. “Okay so now we’re walking into…” wastes time you will review later.
  • If a trade is obvious, say it. “This is a paint touch-up,” or “this needs the electrician.” The draft can still be wrong; you will catch it in review.
  • Keep the clip to the walk. Stop recording when you leave the unit instead of narrating the drive back to the truck.

After you upload

Punchlist Live drafts punch-list items from the narration and matched frames. Nothing publishes to the team until you review it. Tighten the wording, confirm the photo, set ownership, and only then treat it as the working list.

If you want the broader closeout sequence—who walks, when you assign, how you export—read how to run a closeout walkthrough.

Walk the site once. Leave with a list that can move.
